It is not something you can find behind a door some place or something you can cook up on the stove in the kitchen, what is the peace of God? It is not something you can find in a store or yard sale, not in a dictionary or public event. The peace of God does not hide beneath a rock or leak out from your hands like water when it is caught. What is the peace of God? Does it have an “it” and is “It” a noun or a verb. For how long has the peace of God been here on the planet and do all religions express and teach that such a thing exists?
What is the peace of God?
First one must find a way to define this god idea? What a vague and mysterious word is God, languages around the world call “Him” Allah, Yahweh, Christ, Om, energy, the great spirit, etc. God could be a sound, a presence, a guide, the omnipotent, the lawgiver and judge. How can any of these descriptions amply define what is God? This indefinable presence will come with a handshake, in a kiss, or quiet moment almost undetectable by you? You will notice it as what you have always longed for and cannot create of your own.
Into the great wide open
The peace of God and the God of Peace could be the same perhaps, or even peace and God are interchangeable. You can experience peace in the midst of a hurricane and within the desperate exhaustion that comes with the death of a loved one. This peace that descends when we least expect it is the presence of God, it happens in the great wide open space of mind and body. Whatever it is, without this Divine presence, life would be dry and predictable.
The peace of God according to Christ can be given as a kiss or a hand shake, when someone sees you completely. Saint Francis told us it would be given to those who desire to be an instrument of it. Does the peace of God have any lasting effect on our soul? If you have had the experience of God or Peace, cherish it and spend your life in pursuit of it. It is a grace worthy of a lifetime of exploration and another Grace to share it with others.
