The serenity prayer says, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change and the courage to change the things I can.” It states we will be given the wisdom to know the difference between the things that are under your control and the things that are beyond your control.
Good God, in this day and age don’t we all need to be reminded. It is a tiny prayer packed with an invitation to STOP! Reflect and be thankful. This is not new spirituality, it what we have forgotten as we go along believing we can have it all.
Some say the philosophy and wording came from the early Greeks; others think it was from the pen of an anonymous English poet; still others claim it was written by an American Naval officer… .” Other attributions have gone as far afield as ancient Sanskrit texts, Aristotle, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas and Spinoza.
The Serenity prayer , wherever it came from, it helps us to remember the true calm self we all have within. The ocean of consciousness is vast and at time turbulent where we see no assurance of a coast line for security. Prayer, mediation, contemplation, whatever way you choose to call focusing the mind, it is vital these days to navigate our will towards a higher power, one that is connected to all things.
“God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things which should be changed,
and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.”
