The “job” of an icon was to exist in place as a window to the divine.
I call myself an outsider iconographer.
I try to paint what I cannot see as a spiritual journey, this is the traditional part, but what inspires me is the million year old dirt I paint with.
I believe the earth was divinely created, not sure how or the details but one thing is undeniable, the earth governs a wide array of infinite color and diverse form. Our spiritual life is delightfully mirrored with equaled vast, limitless expression. I am always astonished when the physical activity of painting with earth pigments releases image through me or better expressed, through my hand. My mind suddenly becomes matter.
Gazing attentively at any square inch of the painting, mine or your own, you will find a world layered in meditation, color, mystery, time and space.
WE .. ARE… BEING… THOUGHT
All communication helps us realize;
We are not alone,
We are all connected,
We live outside of time and space
We are loved because we are sustained
We will begin to perceive this
through thought, love,
vibration, breath, and energy.
The new body of work in photoshop explores the limits of image and message. The time I spend in Photoshop playing with my icons, superimposing them on photos of where I have been are the ground for new paintings.
The photoshop work is a fast version for expressing an idea which dates back millenniums; spirit is seeing us constantly and everywhere. I want the work to speak of holiness being felt and experienced by everyone.
“I am” is an ancient concept of the divine. So is an icon,(means image). Painting images in egg tempera is limitless meditation; the process has seduced me into looking at what is obvious, “I am” matter and mind.
We are told icons are portraits of a concept we cannot see. I understand the statement but somewhere left trying to realize it. Instead, I now see the potential for spiritual awareness is trapped in million year old dirt because there beauty and stillness change my world, one inch at a time.
Painting with egg tempera has enabled me to grasp the value and significance which separates matter and spirit. The delicate membrane around the yolk hold the essence of life within itself, liken to humans whose flesh holds the consciousness of God.
