About the Icon Painting in the Georgia Workshop

Painting with earth pigments becomes an extraordinary Icon painting experience with Mary Jane Miller. The iconography process will change your perspective about our earth and broaden your awareness of color and texture.

Our workshop will explore ancient stone pigments called egg tempera. Each participant will finish painting one Byzantine Style icon.

We have lively and insightful discussions about God, why we are here, and the technique. The group will get an introduction to the Byzantine style tradition of painting icons in a contemporary format. Each participant will create the icon image, using egg tempera, earth pigments, and gold leaf application, tracing the historical and theological basis for icons. We cover the symbolism and prayer embedded in this ancient tradition. Our icon painting course highlight the contemplative experience through sacred icon art.

Life comes from an unseen spirit energy, we witness creation in form and color.

The best finished icons communicate stillness in the viewer. They bring about comfort, revelation, a connection to our interior self, and healing. Blairsville, Georgia icon painting workshop 2022, we will strive to experience some of these qualities as we paint. There is an infinite range of imagination found in sacred iconography. They do not all have to be Orthodox icons, Russian icons or even in the traditional icon style. Ideally, in this class, we can merge the past and our interpretation of the present to create modern art icons.

As a female icon painter living in Mexico, Mary Jane Miller believes Byzantine style iconography has the potential to reflect humankind’s continual delight and beauty found in the search for spiritual fulfillment. She teaches the subtle joy of listening to our own personal mysticism. If you cannot get to Mexico for Miller’s icon retreats held in her studio in San Miguel Allende you can join this icon painting workshop in Georgia.

You don’t need to be of any religious belief or experienced iconographers to enjoy this Icon painting workshop. Each time we immerse the brush to stir the paint, a spiral of color forms. It is enough for us to witness this magnificent, tiny world of paint constantly sharing its own life force and message. We are made whole by the paint, which teaches because it exists in the same way that we exist.

Can Anyone take an Iconography Class?

Yes. In fact, less experience is always better. Whether it is theology, technique, or any art form, it is often difficult to unlearn what we have learned. The point is growing in awareness and love.

Making room for new awareness does not have to be a challenge. Mixing dirt and mystery is definitely uplifting. Every brush stroke reminds you of the moment in Genesis where breath and creation meet. Anything can happen!

You are welcome to make a suggestion as to which saint you want to paint. If you have any questions, millericons@gmail.com
