Women in Iconography
The Women in Iconography are remembered for their presence and their courageous efforts to reflect God’s manifestation in life. Without ignoring the accepted visual cannons of iconography, the viewer is offered a fresh perspective on the stories portrayed. The concise language of icons sparks the imagination and provides new creative opportunities to contemplate the enigmatic workings of the Spirit in one’s life. This collection of Mary Jane Miller’s Byzantine-style icons is about women. Their portrayal has the potential to influence future theology through new liturgy and image. New contemporary images help to change the narrative for men and women everywhere. The entire collection of Women in Iconography is available in Book form.
Repouse and Egg Tempera
Hand Hammered Pewter
Valentin Gomez, my spouse and I have been quietly working together for 30 years in this ancient technique called iconography. Our icon paintings are embellished with hand-tooled pewter called the repousé. Valentin’s metal embossing is masterful craftsmanship and fits perfectly to my hand-painted Byzantine style icons. The techniques of Repouse and egg tempera are a perfect marriage. Our dream is to add new iconography to those existing in the world, hoping that this sacred art tradition will continue in liturgy and prayer well into the future. The book How to Emboss Metal and collection of repouse images is available, in book form Embossing Metal.

Contemporary Icon Paintings
New concepts in Iconography
Mary Jane Miller began a new collection of contemporary icons called On Holy Ground. The collection began at Vaughan Park Retreat Center, Auckland NZ, during a resident scholars program in 2019. The work focuses on caring for and reflecting on the wonders of our planet Earth. Let us reflect on a growing number of Earth images to express the idea that all consciousness and creation is connected.
Humanity is coming to know Christ’s consciousness, divine inspiration in and outside of time and space. Miller stretches the ancient canons to include the Earth and biblical text to be interpreted in new ways. Spirit has a specific identity felt and understood by humankind. Consciousness, intuition, and awareness can all be attributed to spirituality. Our Earth has an energetic intelligence continually manifesting through love, it has always been the strongest pulse that we know of. As Christians, Christ’s consciousness dictates and validates our place on our planet. Our relationship to planet Earth and the Word must change to enhance and protect our evolution as one species.
