I have recently been working on a series called, “Stone Images”.
It began as one painting and expanded into this small series, thinking i could utilize only black and white egg tempera paint. Never been disciplined enough for limitations and confinement, even if they are self imposed. Creativity is what runs through the veins of most artists… along with how many options can one idea present… The many lovely earth tones used in egg tempera are hard to exclude even through the process of one painting.
Egg Tempera Technique is an ancient art form, one not everyone would take the time to master . The color, shades and textures abound on planet earth and what a fantastic time I had trying to limit myself to just two colors, bone black and titanium white. I gave in quickly and began adding Burnt Siana, Bavarian Green and ocher yellow. With a new limited pallet I had come up with, a new style beacons more exploration.
Organic Egg Tempera Technique
The face of Christ has been my favorite subject matter for many years. See web site. For some time now I have been reducing His iconic image to just the face. I’d like to get rid of the hair as well! After the first and beginning attempts, I started thinking about Egg Tempera Technique, mother earth and the organic potential for life locked up in the her earth pigments. For me this naturally lead to thoughts of Saint Mary and feminine energy.
Most Artists can relate to blindly groping through a new idea. The images and how I have rendered them is a kind of rest from all the world being so intense. Simplify the pallet. The other day I heard a funny song on our Sirius MX satellite radio, Coffee House Chanel. It was a guy singing about all the things going wrong, like 50,000 plastic bottles washing up on the shore and the chorus was,”I just want life to be easy”. Iconography states beauty will save the world, others say Art will save it, maybe Music or Love will save it. No one ever says Guns will save the world, or Laws, or Money. I was satisfied painting these kind images, filled with emotions of gentleness and hope for a better world. I began with original photos of various moments within a woman’s life.
They are meant to be romantic and filled with the best qualities women have to offer and some of the mystery. Enjoy!
