The icon is an organic and dynamic piece of creation that has survived time to speak to us. Today as an icon painter in egg tempera, I try to maintain its universality rebellious at times, but with a sincere desire that this great art form may continue to reach across generations. Each icon painting is a spiritual journey, a portrait not only of the image but a documentation of emotional brush strokes. As an iconographer, my own physical, mental and spiritual weaknesses and strengths are reflected. With attention tuned to the presence of grace, some determined inner silence and daily perseverance one image is created and the another.
Icon Painting
While the work is done in solitude and contemplation, one important element is the interior dialogue and point of view towards the image. I try to listen to the conversation and the deep human questions which arise to build bridges of understanding across cultures and faith tradition. Unfortunately I do work alone and not often enough do I get an opportunity to share suspicious interpretations and perspectives.
Imagine what might develop when we shed the robes of shyness and cloak ourselves in robes of the divine freedom? Imagine if we spoke more often of the intimate moments we experience through art and prayer?
