It is not easy to be driven by something you cannot see, to be completely aware of a desire you’re afraid to act on, as well as ignore. I was in the third week painting an icon of Moses. God said to him, “You are standing on Holy Ground”. In the studio, painting Byzantine icons entails patience and prayer everyday on holy ground with a focused mind. I have come to see, iconographers live and work in a twisted dimension painting biblical text, sometimes the text distorts the reality and sometimes reality distorts the text. Ancient Byzantine Icons technique and modern egg tempera medium enables us to realize something quite intimate about God, ‘we create as we are created’.
Internally iconographers believe “beauty will save the world”, the act of painting Byzantine icons transmits what is beautiful about humanity and points towards a growing sense of the divine in all of creation.
A Dedicated Pair of Artists creating Byzantine Icons
Valentin Gomez, my spouse works the repouse and I, the painted image; we are both self taught Byzantine Icon style Iconographers. We have been collaborating for 20 years, living in Mexico. Our dream is to add a few more icons to the worlds collection and hope there remains a continued use for this great tradition in liturgy and prayer for a long time to come.
Someone once called me a mystic without a monastery, traveling the countryside with a few icons and placing them strategically and comically where you would least expect them. The hope is to bring surprise and delight to the observer and remind us all to seek God more.
Icons and books for a more spiritual tomorrow. Peace Mary Jane Miller
