Icon Painting Workshops, Ossining, NY or Lewis, Delaware

Modern Iconography  Icon Painting in The Light

We will return to

April 10 to 15 2016   Mariandale Retreat Center, Ossining, NY

I like to think the course is a meditation as well as an icon painting class. Monastic life holds the value of silence for many reasons but one in particular is valuable, while not conversing with one another the energy is saved allowing us to notice what we have missed within and around us. Egg tempera requires simple quiet attention.

We notice more by not talking.

The icon workshop promises to be an introduction to the practice and theory of traditional icon painting, a multi-step process, leading form dark to light, rough to refined and chaos to order.

icon painting

Icons are windows on a world that calls us to be still and rest in a place of thankfulness with God. Traditional icon writing is an ancient spiritual practice; an extraordinary prayer.

This retreat is for all skill levels, absolutely no experience necessary.

The idea of moving small particles of sand around with a brush to create a divine image is exhilarating, it is contemplative. The practice requires considerable time and patience. The challenge lies in transmitting my peace, passion, fear, sadness or joy while abiding the artistic rules that govern traditional icon painting. This is an ancient language handed down from Byzantium times, 1,500 years ago.
